After 50-plus years of selling military and camping supplies, Army Navy Surplus Sales, 707 W. Wisconsin Ave., will close its doors for good.
Kennit Marx, who started working at the shop in 1994 and purchased the business in 2006, says he is meeting with his accountant tomorrow and he is unsure when exactly the last day will be.
"It could be today (the store is open until 4 p.m.) or it could be as late as Tuesday," says Marx.
Marx says there are two reasons he is shuttering the business: online competition and customers viewing the store more like a museum.
"The internet killed it," says Marx. "People are able to push a button and have it delivered to houses, and if they don’t like it, they send it back."
Many of the people who came into the store didn’t buy anything; rather, they told Marx stories about the significance of the shop in their past. Some even brought their children or grandchildren to show them the space, but not to buy anything.
"I’m not Memory Lane over here, but that’s what people seem to think," says Marx, who plans to work on improving his health and possibly work in the art world.
Personally, I purchased quite a few things from this place in the past, including Army pants and tank tops in high school and college and a pair of combat boots in 2010 that I still rock today. But, alas, I could have gotten my ass in there more and now I wish I would have. (Insert sad salute here.)
