On Nov. 7, Wisconsinites will vote on whether or not to add language to the Wisconsin State Constitution that would permanently deny civil unions and marriage to gay and lesbian people in Wisconsin. Should gay marriages be recognized in Wisconsin? Do gay couples deserve the same benefits as straight couples?

I'm stationed by Anchorage, which reminds me of Milwaukee. Short buildings, cheap food, winters that suck and last forever, lots of places to get payday advances and pawn off your excess guns. Getting fairly homesick here.

At first blush, Boston might not seem a reasonable comparison. But just think about it for a second: You've got a city proper of about 600,000 people, you've got a city with a rich history, fantastic cultural appeal, world-class cuisine, and big-time sports. You also have a fairly provincial and segregated city. And ... you're in the shadow of a much larger, and more obnoxious, neighbor to the south!

The Northern Mexican city of Monterrey reminded me of Milwaukee when I first visited in 1985. At the time I visited, it seemed of similar size, had reasonably good bus service and... a brewery tour! While the Cervecería Cuauhtémoc was no match for (at that time) Milwaukee's Schlitz, Pabst and Miller tours, it made me feel a bit at home.

I always refer to Tampa as "Milwaukee with a warmer climate," because to me, that's exactly what it is. It's not too large, not to small, and very much "just the right size." Hey, I even had my first Krispy Kreme doughnut down there ... The "Crown Jewel" of the Tampa area is a place called Ybor City. It's much like Water Street here in Milwaukee, although it's laced with cobblestone streets, fountains and more clubs and restaurants than you can imagine. I always call it "Water Street times 100" ... Tampa's weather's great, and the people are friendly; only half of which we can say for Milwaukee.

St. Louis. There is a lot of the same architecture, hard-to-pronounce street names and a pretty vital summer nightlife. Unfortunately, it's also about as segregated as Milwaukee, and the crime rate is pretty high.
