"La La Land" may have quite literally had its Best Picture Oscar ripped from its grasp at Sunday night's ceremony, but the bright-eyed movie musical still was one of the evening's big winners. Damien Chazelle's dizzying tribute to old Hollywood song-and-dance stories scored six wins – including Academy Awards for Best Score and Best Original Song for "City of Stars."
And now fans stuck whistling its earworm-y tunes can hear them live, as the Riverside Theater announced today that it will bring the award-winning songs to the stage with the help of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.
For two shows – on Friday, June 23 and Saturday, June 24 – the Riverside will project the Oscar-winning film, a musical tale about a jazz musician and aspiring actress trying to make it in Hollywood together, on the big screen. MSO will joining the showing, chiming in with the movie's bouncy, bittersweet score and songs – written by Wisconsin native and former Nicolet High School student Justin Hurwitz, who now has two Oscars with his name on them.
Tickets for the two performances will go on sale starting Friday, March 3 at noon, ranging in price from $29.50 to $45.50, $55.50 and $75.50.
And for now, we'll just have to take the Riverside's word that it will be "La La Land" showing those two nights and not actually "Moonlight" swooping in at the last night (though if the MSO and Riverside wanted to team up for a live presentation of that as well, no arguments here).
As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
