Monterrey Market's second location opened quietly last week at 3920 S. 27th St. inside the former Toys "R" Us. Owner Robert Montemayor opened the first location at 3014 S. 13th Street in 2010.
This new store is massive – 38,000 square feet – and although open for shopping, it is still under construction. The space will soon welcome a bank, cell phone store, pharmacy and area dedicated entirely to pick-up and curbside service.
Monterrey Market is bright and colorful, with fun signage like "Life happens. Cerveza helps." and "Say Queso!" The stock includes full lines of Hispanic and American groceries, along with a butcher, bakery, hot and cold to-go foods (tamales!) and soon, a cafe called Don Miguel's, named after Montemayor's late brother who is buried in the cemetery across the street.
Montemayor has lived in Milwaukee for 20 years and has been visiting family here for 50 years. He bought the building earlier this year and is committed to the neighborhoods.
"This area is important to me," says Montemayor, who is a member of the 27th Street BID and the president of the 13th & Oklahoma Street BID. He is also on the board for the Basilica of St. Josaphat.
"I have family and friends here, but also, it's a melting pot of cultures: Hispanic, European, Middle Eastern, Asian, Indian, Ethiopian, Hmong. It's the same at our other store – everyone swings through there," he says. "And we're happy to serve them."
Monterrey Market is open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
