Milwaukee fashion pioneer Ma Jolie/ Footgear, quietly closed its doors at 2583 N. Downer Ave. at the end of June. The retailer that sold both men's and women's fashions, jeans, jewelry, footwear and more had been at its East Side Milwaukee for 39 years. It has a second location that remains open at Bayshore Town Center.
A sign on the space reads:
"Ma Jolie - Footgear will be closing this Downer Avenue location on June 30, 2014. We wish to thank everyone who has supported our store over the past 39 years! We will continue our business at the Bayshore Town Center location. We look forward to seeing you there soon!"
Manager Andrea Peiffer also confirmed the closing via email, reminding Milwaukee that it's still open at Bayshore.
The closing is a bit of blow to one of Milwaukee's best streets. While growth continues on Downer Avenue with Pizza Man, a recently renovated and expanded Starbucks, the seemingly always busy Boswell Books, the new Deja Vu on Downer, a new Bel Air Cantina replacing Via and more, losing a local retailer and signature business is a loss.
Across the street Nail Bar Milwaukee will open soon, and just north the Downer Theatre and other area businesses like Cafe Hollander continue to thrive.
