Tequila and mezcal are hot in the alcohol industry, and Patrick Todd is excited to bring a bar to Milwaukee that specializes in agave spirits.

La Piña, which means "pineapple" in Spanish and is also the heart of the agave plant, will open in the first week of May, if all goes according to plan.

The space, 1801 S. 3rd St., is the former home of Triskele's bar and restaurant. It is located just west of the new Japanese-American-themed bar, Red Maple.

La Piña will specialize in agave liquors and will eventually offer 100+ tequilas and 30 different kinds of mezcal.

"Tequila is a misunderstood spirit. There’s a lot more to it than people think," says Todd, who has 15 years in the hospitality industry.

It also feature a full bar stocked with beer, wine, cocktails, mocktails and flights.

"We plan to host a lot of  tasting events focusing on tequila and mezcal with the goal of educating our guests," says Todd. "We are also going to have meet-the-makers events, cocktail classes, to-go boxes and more. We want people to enjoy our space, but then take our passion for agave spirits beyond our walls and into their homes."

La Piña will also host bingo, trivia, happy hours, chill music nights, painting classes and will, hopefully, serve food later this year from Ball 'n Biscuit. The catering business, formerly in Riverwest, will move operations to La Piña.

The feel of La Piña will be "modern cantina" with a Latin and South American color palette. Todd and his crew did a major remodel of the space, with new flooring, paint, updated electric and wall removal. They also added a jukebox and a back bar.

"I am very passionate about tequila and mezcal, especially the history, process and production. I'm excited to build a network within Milwaukee with other people who share my love for agave spirits," says Todd.
