On July 18, Milwaukee will have its first chance to taste the brand new concept that replaces the now-shuttered Locavore at Potawatomi Hotel and Casino.
The new restaurant, Canal Street Café, will offer classic fare in an environment that pays homage to Milwaukee.
Breakfast dishes, served 7 to 11 a.m., will include eggs benedict ($10.95), biscuits and gravy ($8.95), huevos rancheros ($9.95) and steak and eggs ($15.95), along with omelettes, pancakes and waffles.
Lunch offerings, served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., include appetizers like deep-fried mashed potatoes served with gravy, bacon and cheddar cheese ($3.95); fried cheese curds ($6.95); and chili cheese fries ($6.95). Salads including iceberg, garden, Caesar, spinach and chopped salad ($4.95-11.95) will accompany daily soups, as well as house chili ($3.95/$4.95).
Classic sandwiches include the French dip ($9.95), reuben ($10.95) and tempura battered fish ($8.95), along with burgers and entrees like spaghetti and meatballs ($8.95), a beef pot pie ($8.95) and fried coconut shrimp ($10.95) served alongside French fries, coleslaw and cocktail sauce. Select breakfast items will also be available on the lunch menu.
Dinner offerings, served from 4 to 10 p.m., overlap lunch offerings with similar appetizer, salad, soup and burger offerings, while adding additional entrees such as meatloaf with mashed potatoes, gravy and the vegetable of the day ($12.95), chicken fried steak ($14.95), shrimp scampi pasta ($16.95) and chicken schnitzel served with bacon-mushroom sauce, fried potatoes and vegetables ($14.95).
On the sweeter side, desserts (available for both lunch and dinner) include death by chocolate cake, strawberry shortcake, white chocolate cream cheese mousse and skillet pie (with a choice of fruit or cream pie), priced $6-8.
"We are listening to our guests and feel that this restaurant will better serve the tastes of our guests," said Rodney Ferguson, chief operating officer, in a release from Potawatomi. "We are confident the new restaurant will exceed our guests’ wants and needs and provide the menu and service they are looking for."
Oscar Vega Medina has been named chef at Canal Street Café. Medina has been with Potawatomi Hotel & Casino since March 2015, when he was hired as a sous chef in the property’s production kitchen. Prior to his arrival, he earned his culinary training education in Irapuato, Mexico. His experience includes work at Simple Café, Motor, Bacchus and Ristorante Bartolotta’s.
Canal Street Café will be open will be open daily from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m.
