Joel Kempfer's artistic focus started with photography, but with the help of technology, it has evolved into new forms.

"I start with a photographic capture and manipulate the image using a variety of digital platforms," says Kempfer. "I’ve loved photography since I was a child and new technology allows me to elevate my vision beyond the capture."

As a young man, Kempfer joined the Navy after being guaranteed a spot in the Photographers’ Mate School. However, during his boot camp physical they discovered he was color blind and the offer was rescinded. However, this didn't stop Kempfer from pursuing photography on his own.

Thus, today Kempfer is a 100 percent self-taught artist and says his inspirations come from Milwaukee's architecture, history, people and cultures. 

For Kempfer, sheltering in place during the pandemic has had a positive effect on his work. It's granted him the time to concentrate solely on creating.

"I’ve been more productive these past few months than ever before," he says.
