Every week in 2015, OnMilwaukee.com and local design company Too Much Metal join forces to introduce the latest member of the Milwaukee All-Stars – a team of unfamiliar winners living in the city who consistently and diligently make it shine. Each week, a new member will join the team – based on your recommendations – and at the end of the year all will come together in a Rally of the Raddest Milwaukeeans. We're not sure what that means quite yet, so for now, meet …
Steve Feih
As the owner of a bicycle messenger business called Milwaukee Courier Company and because he doesn't own a car, Steve Feih rides a bicycle most days of the year.
"Business keeps going in all weather and so do we," says Feih. "Old Spice deodorant is the jam."
Feih, who grew up in Brewer's Hill, lives in the Walker's Point neighborhood today. He is committed to his work, his friends and making Milwaukee a bike-conscious city.
"The bike population is growing and the city's doing a damn fine job," says Feih. "We're getting bike lane after bike lane."
OnMilwaukee.com / Too Much Metal: How long have you worked this job?
Steve Feih: I’ve been a bicycle courier for eight years in the city of Milwaukee. My job specializes in same day delivery; mostly delivering parcels to and from law firms, courthouse filings, case research and copy jobs – and just about everything in-between. Services are guaranteed from two hour service down to fifteen minutes or less. The majority are law firms, graphic design and advertising agencies, investment groups but there's much more.
For the first first two years I worked at a company named STS Delivery, then branched out and started Milwaukee Courier Company. Believe it or not, the name took a couple weeks to come up with.
OMC / TMM: What time of year / season is your favorite in Milwaukee and why?
SF: Hands down I love fall in Milwaukee. Warm days, cool nights is ideal for someone outside in my line of work. Milwaukee still is in constant post-summer party mode with a ton of things to do; I’ve never seen a city try to push so many events into a four-month summer than this one. Really, we’re fortunate with the beauty of the seasons we have here. Winter is a beast, but I do enjoy how everything slows down. It’s always a reflective time for people, when you find yourself retooling and prepping for summer.
OMC / TMM: What’s your favorite / least favorite smell in Milwaukee?
SF: The State Fair. Man, the combination of deep fried food, over-flowing porta-potties, pig manure, warm Bud Light and Stetson cologne mixed with the weird pheromones of a West Allis princess dancing to a Great White cover band is truly choice.
OMC / TMM: What’s your hope for Milwaukee?
SF: That someone buys out The Rave. It’s the biggest draw for major musicians to come here, and ran like a prison camp. I miss so many good acts for not being able to stomach the place, or the nine dollar beers, and tribal-tattooed, protein-guzzling gorilla security guards pouncing on people.
OMC: When did you fall in love with Milwaukee?
SF: I tended bar at Nessun Dorma in the very beginning years of it establishing. It was a nasty winter night and a friend and I were running my Australian Shepherd at Gordon Park. I slipped and destroyed my ankle, broke in three places. At the time all I had was my bar gig, and being in my early twenties of course nothing set aside or insurance. My friends and coworkers rallied together and put a benefit together at Linneman’s with a ton of local bands.
That night my roommate packed me in a Burly kid carrier and rode me on his bike to the benefit. When I hobbled inside the place was packed and I instantly started bawling. It was amazing and raised enough money to get by while I was out of work. That night I knew we had something special in this town.
OMC: Why do you do what you do?
SF: Freedom. Pure and simple. Having the opportunity to not only support myself, but also a handful of hard-working people is the biggest break I got in my life. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a courier aging badly, it keeps us youthful and vibrant. Every day is a hustle and never the same. I couldn’t even imagine counting down the days bathing in the florescent lights in an office counting down the days to retirement. I’ll take my chances playing in traffic. Riding a bike is the best therapy session I get every day; no matter how it starts I feel like a champ when I finish my last drop off.
OMC / TMM: What is your guilty pleasure?
SF: Taco trucks. I could eat at a taco truck every day. My favorite is across from Koz’s Mini Bowl.
OMC / TMM: If you could high five any Milwaukeean, who would it be?
SF: Bob Uecker. Face high-five? Scott Walker.
