Here's my problem: I can't figure out if "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" is a good movie. Despite all of its significant steps forward, I also feel strangely unaffected by "The Desolation of Smaug." For all of the movie's grandiose and bombastic spectacle, it's oddly unspectacular. It's a big movie that leaves a surprisingly underwhelming impact.
