Ice skating in Shorewood is a longtime tradition and, in honor of that, a group of dads who call themselves "The Lake Bluff Ice Captains" decided to organize "Shorewood Chill." Shorewood Recreation and Community Services Department, the Village of Shorewood and the Shorewood Business Improvement District are also involved.
The inaugural Shorewood Chill takes place Saturday, Feb. 10 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Lake Bluff Elementary School ice rink, 1600 E. Lake Bluff Blvd., and includes skating, skate sharpening ($10), local food vendors Milwaukee Brat House and Funky Fresh Spring Rolls, Colectivo coffee and cocoa, homemade baked goods, a bonfire with s’mores, a DJ from Shorewood’s Sound By Design and an appearance by Admirals mascot Roscoe. Ice sculpting and snowshoes racing are also a possibility.
Representative from Bublr Bikes, the North Shore Fire/Rescue and the Shorewood Police will also be on site.
"The Shorewood Chill is a brand new winter event that gives residents a chance to get outdoors and enjoy some fun winter activities," said Recreation Supervisor Megan Welch.
The Ice Captains build and maintain the rink. Members include Andy Skwierawski, Jamie Reeve, Tim Vander Mel, Todd DeBlois and Brad Javorsky.
The rink is open each day after school and all weekend. The warming house has 80 pairs of skates in various sizes and styles and are free to rent.
If the weather doesn’t cooperate, movies will screen inside Lake Bluff school. Contact Megan Welch with questions at (414) 963-6913, ext 4, or via email at mwelch@shorewood.k12.wi.us.
