Wear it: Garmin Approach S1 GPS
Tis the season but the golf course is never far from my mind -- which is why I would love to get one of these wrapped around my wrist for the first rounds of 2015 (or this winter, if you're heading to warmer locales). It's the Garmin Approach S1 GPS watch, and honestly, it has to be pretty good for me to recommend a GPS aid. I cannot stand delays on the golf course, and yardage finders have only slowed things down even more for casual golfers. What I like about this product is that it's got a regular watch look -- it's not clunky -- and it offers you the very basics you need as you approach your shot. Really, Joe Duffer, all you need to know is the yardage provided here -- to the front, middle and back of the green (of course you can get other numbers, too) and as a devoted walker, I love that there is an odometer on here too. -- Jim Owczarski
Drink it: Trader Joe's sipping chocolate with Rumchata
One of my favorite ways to warm up on chilly Milwaukee nights is hot chocolate -- with Rumchata of course. Recently I picked up this sipping chocolate from Trader Joe's and all I can say is yum! When I am not feeling all the motivated and don't want to melt down my own chocolate this is a great option. Enjoy. -- Carolynn Buser

Wear them: Laces-less boys' skates
I really love to take my sons ice skating at Red Arrow Park in the winter, but I dispise having to hunch over and lace their skates. This year, I am considering treating them – and my back – to skates with buckles instead of laces. I would prefer not to spend this much on something that will probably only fit one season, but the thought of being on the ice quickly and easily inspires me to whip out the plastic. Plus, their favorite color is orange and since this sort of thing is important to kids, it makes these skates even more appealing. Look for us at the rink this winter – I'll be the one standing next to it with a Starbucks latte in hand. -- Molly Snyder
Read it: "How We Learn: The Surprising Truth About When, Where and Why It Happens," by Benedict Carey (Random House)
Last year, I really dug Paul Tough's "How Children Succeed," which explored how "grit" and "character" and curiosity -- a hunger for knowledge -- can translate into success for students. Now, The New York Times' science reporter Benedict Carey looks at how our brains actually learn in a book that reads to me like a companion to Tough's work (although I doubt that was the intention). What Carey himself learned in his research was that many of the ideas we have about effective study and learning techniques are actually myths -- the opposite of what students ought to be doing to really absorb and retain knowledge. -- Bobby Tanzilo
