Hot town, summer in the city. Nothing like summer in Milwaukee, especially for the world of sports.
The top 20 sports things to do in Milwaukee during the summer months (or weeks, or days, or whatever). You can watch or play, whatever trips your trigger.
- Watch Ryan Braun un-strap and re-strap his batting gloves after every single pitch. I mean every pitch.
- Watch people play Frisbee golf in one of the parks; no mulligans allowed.
- Volleyball at Bradford Beach. If you like looking at boys or girls, this is pretty cool.
- Take a 9 iron, a putter and a kid to the Lake Park golf course. You pay on the honor system.
- Buy a bike or take one and take one of the many bike trails in the city.Remember, it's not a race.
- Find a sports bar with a patio and outside TV screens (I don't know if there are any). Drink beer, watch sports, eat wings and sit outside.
- Go watch little kids (3 and 4-year-olds) play soccer. It gives new meaning to the word "swarm."
- Go see some minor league baseball in Appleton or Beloit.
- Cruise the city late in the afternoon and find a great pickup basketball game. Look for a crowd of onlookers. You will see great high school, college and some non-school players dazzle during the summer.
- Play tennis at McKinley park. Great views. And you might see a hot doubles game between four players, all over 70 years old. It's spectacular and heart-warming all at once.
- Watch Prince Fielder swing hard and miss. Then watch him unscrew his body until he's upright again.
- Take a little kid fishing at the Juneau Park lagoon.
- Go early in the morning, park at the Northpoint custard stand and watch people windsurf on Lake Michigan. Now this takes a brave person.
- At a lot of basketball courts – Maryland Avenue, Kern Park, Hartford Avenue – you can pull up and park your car, sit in the air conditioning, and watch one kid play hoops. Shoot, go get it, dribble and shoot again. Think about this kid.
- Sit in a lawn chair, beer in hand, and listen to Bob Uecker. Then say a prayer of thanks.
- Go out to the race track at State Fair Park when there are no races. Walk around. Shake your head in sadness. Go home and write a letter to the State Fair Park Board and the governor.
- Take a cooler and go out to Brown Deer golf course. Sit on a bench behind the first tee. You'll come away with a much improved appreciation for people who play golf well. Plus you'll get some summertime laughs.
- Buy a badminton set at Walmart and set it up. The game is a lot of fun.
- When (not if) training camp starts in Green Bay, go watch a practice, have lunch at Kroll's and stop for candy at Seroogy's on your way back.
- Did I mention watching the volleyball players at Bradford Beach?
With a history in Milwaukee stretching back decades, Dave tries to bring a unique perspective to his writing, whether it's sports, politics, theater or any other issue.
He's seen Milwaukee grow, suffer pangs of growth, strive for success and has been involved in many efforts to both shape and re-shape the city. He's a happy man, now that he's quit playing golf, and enjoys music, his children and grandchildren and the myriad of sports in this state. He loves great food and hates bullies and people who think they are smarter than everyone else.
This whole Internet thing continues to baffle him, but he's willing to play the game as long as OnMilwaukee.com keeps lending him a helping hand. He is constantly amazed that just a few dedicated people can provide so much news and information to a hungry public.
Despite some opinions to the contrary, Dave likes most stuff. But he is a skeptic who constantly wonders about the world around him. So many questions, so few answers.
