"Today" – which airs locally on NBC weekdays at 7 a.m. – featured a segment on Monday during its "Changemakers" series about a Milwaukee running group called F.E.A.R.
The acronym stands for "Forget Everything And Run" (F.E.A.R.) The group, created in 2016, is a community of black and brown young professionals – including Wisconsin's lieutenant governor Mandela Barnes – who enjoy socializing and running together. Although the group was forced to suspend in-person interactions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they have remained connected virtually.
The 8-minute video segment was created by local, women-owned LionArt Media and includes a song by Milwaukee rapper WebsterX. It focuses on the significance of running for individual group members and how it extends beyond fitness into a place of community and social justice.
The video also explores the dangerous reality of "running while black," such as the murder of 25-year-old black man Ahmaud Arbery who was shot and killed in Georgia by two white men while on a run in February.
