The largest participation sport in the world is called football everywhere else. In America, it is soccer. And the sport is now the largest participation sport in the U.S., after dethroning bowling a few decades ago.
Despite heavy marketing, it has taken a while for professional soccer to develop a fan base. It may never get to the level that basketball, football, baseball and hockey have here, but the number of followers is growing. European league games and international contests are broadcast on national cable sports outlets. Time Warner Cable airs specials on the Milwaukee Wave indoor team.
The largest cable outlet in the market is also adding coverage of the Chicago Fire for viewers in Wisconsin. The SportsChannel is now the Wisconsin home of the Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire 2014 season.
"The ability to reach new audiences via our broadcast platform is essential for growing awareness of the Fire," said Chicago Fire COO Atul Khosla. "The partnership with Time Warner Cable Sports, in addition to our youth expansion into Wisconsin is an important next step in growing the Fire base in and around Chicagoland."
The broadcast team of Dan Kelly and Kevin Egan will call the games and Time Warner Cable SportsChannel will air pre- and post-game shows and other non-game programming in the future.

DIY ON THE GO: This week, Time Warner Cable launched mobile access to channel programming from Food Network, HGTV, DIY, Cooking Channel and the Travel Channel through the TWC TV App for iPods, iPads and Android devices.
The out of home access to Scripps Networks Interactive brings live programming to wherever WiFi internet is available.
"We’re thrilled to add Scripps Networks’ live channels to the growing amount of TV content available on TWC TV outside the home," said Mike Angus, Senior VP and GM of Video for Time Warner Cable.
"Customers can now get their fill of ‘Property Brothers,’ ‘Cutthroat Kitchen’ and ‘Ghost Adventures’ as it airs, anytime, anywhere."
The App already has more than 1,100 hours of On Demand TV shows and films available from 26 different networks.
MORE SPORTS: At the beginning of the month, Time Warner Cable added the new CBS Sports Network to the digital tier in most of its markets across the nation.
The 24-hour network channel plans to air more than 400 live games this year, showcasing men’s and women’s sports, in-depth studio shows, documentaries and original programs. CBS Sports Network is also licensed to air more than 50 college football games and 200 college basketball games this season, complemented by week-long studio programming.
CBS Sports network also provides extensive programming around CBS Sports’ Championship events, including the Super Bowl, The Masters, PGA Championship and U.S. Open Tennis Championships.
The new cable outlet in competition with ESPN, Fox Sports 1 and 2, and NBC Sports, also covers the NFL regular season with "NFL Monday QB" and a fan-focused Sunday pregame show called "That Other Pregame Show." The network’s weekday regular programming includes sport talker Jim Rome with "Rome" at 5 p.m. and "Lead Off" at 11 p.m.
