Martin Scorsese's made a lot of headlines over the past month, constantly being pestered about his thoughts on Marvel movies and his unhappy thoughts on what Disney has done to theatrical distribution, causing fans to all reach for their pitchforks and fainting couches. But did you know he also has an actual movie coming out?!
Indeed, Netflix is set to release Scorsese's highly anticipated "The Irishman" – a gangster epic starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and a newly de-retired Joe Pesci – on the streaming service on Nov. 27. In the hopes of helping out its awards season chances, however, the movie is getting a limited theatrical release – including a newly confirmed run at the Oriental Theatre starting on Nov. 22.
Based on the book "I Heard You Paint Houses" by Charles Brandt, "The Irishman" follows Frank Sheeran (De Niro) as he climbs the ranks of a powerful crime family as a professional killer and associate to Jimmy Hoffa. The three-and-a-half hour grim mobster epic recently glowing reviews out of the early festivals and from critics on the coasts who've gotten to see the film in limited release already – and thanks to the Oriental, Milwaukeeans will get to as well. (Don't expect the movie to wind up anywhere else; the theater chains – Marcus, AMC – don't show films unless they have a theatrical release window of 90 days, something Netflix obviously doesn't want with its streaming model. Negotiations were attempted for Scorsese's latest, but they fell through, meaning independent cinemas like the Oriental are Netflix's, and cinephiles', only hope in seeing "The Irishman" on the big screen.)
Showtimes and tickets are now available on the Oriental's website, with showings at noon, 3:15 p.m. and 7 p.m. running through Nov. 26. For more information, visit the Oriental Theatre's website – and while you're there, maybe snag some tickets for "The Lighthouse," "Parasite," "Harriet" (two of the three currently on my best of 2019 list!) or the theater's special screening of the '80s movie "Tammy and the T-rex," a rom-com horror movie involving a dinosaur marketed to kids despite being originally made as a blood-soaked R-rated flick. Oh, the '80s ...
As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
