Summerfest Monday announced that its inaugural half-marathon/10K run scheduled for July 10 will be named the Rock 'n Sole Run.

Milwaukee World Festival CEO Don Smiley said the vision for the race was to create a world-class running event for Milwaukee that also showcases Summerfest.

"We wanted to bring music, running and fun together," Smiley said.

The goal is to attract local, regional and international runners the first year. Those who do participate will find a challenging course certified by the United States Track and Field Association.

Both runs will begin at the same location, heading south on Harbor Drive, from Michigan Street near the Milwaukee Art Museum. Runners will go left onto Theodore Tracker Way (a private road used primarily by MCTS shuttles) and then onto the Lincoln Memorial Drive on-ramp to the Hoan Bridge.

Runners will work their way up and over the bridge down to the Lake Parkway and at the three-mile mark, will turn around and cross the bridge again, this time heading north towards Downtown.

At the foot of the bridge, the two runs will split. Those participating in the 10K will turn right and continue towards the Summerfest grounds via the lakewalk and ending at the Potawatomi Bingo Casino Stage.

Half-marathon participants will continue north on Lincoln Memorial Drive before entering Lake Park near Lake Drive and turning back south, with the course following both parkways and the Oak Leaf Trail, returning to city streets at near North Avenue when the course moves onto Terrace Avenue. Runners will again join the Oak Leaf Trail from Lafayette Place, crossing Lincoln Memorial Drive over the Brady Street Bridge and continuing along bike/walking paths through Veterans Park.

The race will finish with a run along the lakewalk, ending at the Potawatomi Bingo Casino Stage.

"It's a very challenging course," said Tom Schuler of Team Sports Inc., which is helping with the race operation. "The first mile of the race will be very tough."

The two 20 male and female finishers in both events will receive cash prizes, beginning with $2,500 for half-marathon winners and $1,250 for the 10K winners.

Finishers will also receive a medal, reflecting the event logo in the shape of a guitar pick.
