There's nothing better than a good hot bowl of soup and a crust of bread right out of the oven to warm the body and the spirit on a cold blustery day. To those lucky enough to find Stewps, buried in a nondescript stripmall in the heart of the Highway 100 madness of Hales Corners, the reward is simply the best bowls of soup in the city. With all due respect due to Grandma, the husband and wife team of Dave and Dawn Noble has learned the secret of filling their kettles the new-fashioned way from their stint at the Culinary Institute of America. Slow simmered stocks, fresh meats and vegetables, and a creative flair always keep things interesting at this cozy little café.
Tiny little storefront where the exhibition kitchen consumes 90 percent of the space, with a walk up counter and a few tables and chairs for those who chose not to wait to get home to eat the good things in those Styrofoam cups.
Soup and stew are what keep the lines long. Mom's chicken soup, beef stew and an excellent chili spiked with Jack Daniels are the constant on the menu. Such goodies as chicken with toasted barley, cream of wild mushroom and Brazilian black bean fill out the options each day. Each soup or stew comes with your choice of homemade noodles, spaetzles, or wild rice and a wedge of fresh bread. Leftovers are frozen and wait to be reheated at home.
It's a cross section of people on the go. Most simply place their order and walk away with a smile on their face and a bowl of soup tucked under their arm.
