United States Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson has named Steve Stricker, a member of America’s last victorious squad, to serve as the third Vice Captain for the 2014 Team.

Stricker, 47, will serve alongside Andy North, who was appointed last year, and Raymond Floyd, who was chosen in February.

The United States and Europe meet in the 40th Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, in Perthshire, Scotland, Sept. 26-28.

A member of the past three U.S. Ryder Cup Teams, including the winning American squad at Valhalla in 2008, Stricker also was a member of five Presidents Cups Teams, posting a 14-10-0 record.

"What Steve brings is a great familiarity with the players who are on the Tour right now," said Watson. "He’s played against them, played with them, has played with them on Ryder Cup Teams and Presidents Cup Teams. So he brings a great deal of understanding of who these players are and their capabilities."

A native of Edgerton, Stricker has 12 PGA Tour victories. He owns five top-10 finishes in golf’s four major championships, including runner-up in the 1998 PGA Championship.

"The team hasn't been set yet, but the guys just outside the points I know are excited to play and are trying to earn points this week," said Stricker. "There are so many good players, and whoever is on the team is surely going to have played their way in there."

Nine members of the 40th U.S. Ryder Cup Team will be determined at the conclusion of the final round of the 96th PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club. Watson will announce his three Captain’s selections to complete the team on Sept. 2.

In September, the U.S. will attempt to win back the Ryder Cup, which Europe has held since 2010.

Paul McGinley of Ireland is the 2014 European Ryder Cup Team Captain. The qualification system for Europe will conclude following the Race to Dubai Tournament, on Aug. 31. Like Watson, McGinley will have three Captain’s selections.
