Steinhafels is teaming up with OnMilwaukee for a monthly series called "Ask the Designer." It’s your chance to post an interior design question you’ve always wondered about, but never knew who to ask!
This month’s question comes from Samantha in Brookfield. She says, "I just don't know how to put it all together with accessories. What's your advice?"
Steinhafels #DecoratingSolutions Designer Laura Hoffman says she gets this question all the time. Laura works in our Appleton store and has been designing homes in Wisconsin for more than 20 years. She prides herself on truly connecting with her clients.
Laura says accessorizing a home is similar to accessorizing your wardrobe. She explains, "The room design, paint colors, and the base pieces of furniture represent the dress. It should be in neutral tones (a little black dress never goes out of style, right?). The accessories are the jewelry."
We all know how we can glam up a plain black dress right? It’s a similar process for the home. Laura continues, "Add color, textures, throws, pillows, rugs and a little bling like mirrors. Mercury glass is my favorite. Candles and table top decor help make your statement."
Here's a picture where the accessories almost look like pieces of jewelry for the cabinet!
That’s not all. Here are a few top accessorizing tips from Laura:
Add natural elements to your design
You can sometimes even get them from your own backyard! Fresh flowers amid your decor also are great when having guests.
Use ottomans and table trays
They can range from rustic to glamorous to showcase your style.
Use an odd number of items in different shapes and sizes
Coordinate the accent color palette throughout your open concept space
Different lighting elements
Add different lighting elements to create ambiance with lanterns, candles, fire tables, or solar balls that can hang from trees in your garden or on your deck or porch.
Overall, don’t get too caught up in the details. Have fun and show your personality. The best part about accessories – just change them out when you get bored or need a change!
Do you have a question for our designers? Post your question in the comments section of this article, along with your name and location. Or you can post it on Facebook! We’d love to have our designers answer your question next month.
