Seeing as "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will undoubtedly be the biggest movie of the year – and potentially of all time, not including inflation – it only makes sense that every other movie on the planet would want to grab some prime real estate on its money farm. That real estate comes in the form of the trailers running before "The Force Awakens," and in case nerds weren't excited enough, a fellow intergalactic pop culture titan has reportedly claimed some territory.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the first trailer for next summer's "Star Trek Beyond" will show before "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" when the latter opens on Friday, Dec. 18.
The report notes the other big names looking to nab a spot in front of the behemoth blockbuster include "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and "The Huntsman: Winter's War," as well as what would assumably be the first looks at "X-Men: Apocalypse" and "Independence Day: Resurgence." And that doesn't even include fellow Disney movies, like "The Jungle Book" and "Captain America: Civil War," that would surely get dibs for a trailer spot with the Disney-owned "Star Wars."
As it stands, however, "Star Trek Beyond" is the only one confirmed to have a trailer, which makes sense. Not only do the fan bases and audiences overlap considerably, but "The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams directed the last two "Star Trek" movies and is helping produce the latest one.
It's unlikely the "Star Trek Beyond" trailer will exclusively premiere with "The Force Awakens." I'd bet the trailer will be released online, as most are, before the movie's early Thursday night showings on Dec. 17. I'm holding out hope, though, that they hold off; there's something uniquely exciting about seeing a preview for a big movie for the first time on the big screen, slowly figuring out what the film is and feeling everyone else around do the same. It's that communal experience only a theater can offer.
Anyways, we'll find out whether the trailers are the best part when "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hits theaters next week. Holy crap; it comes out next week! I better start camping in line!
As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.
When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
