My favorite is the Milwaukee Public Market. It has a farmer's market with fresh local fruits and vegetables on summer weekends and a great assortment of vendors inside every day. There's an El Rey for fresh corn tortillas, an organic produce stand, a bakery that sells good breads and rolls, and a wide variety of meat and poultry products. It's also certainly the best place to buy fish and seafood in Milwaukee -- the salespeople are knowledgable and friendly and the fish is always excellent.

Absolutely our favorite grocery store is Sendik's on Downer. We shop at many different groceries, but Sendik's on Downer has the friendliest and most helpful staff, and the best bargains in town -- where else but their morning clearance shelf could you get a big chunk of gourmet cheese for 89 cents, or sweet purple carrots for 59 cents? If you've never tried fresh fennel in a salad, or need a dozen limes to make limeade, or if you want to make your own croutons with designer breads, you can't go wrong by doing your shopping early in the day at Sendik's on Downer. And who can resist it when the check-out staff greets your children by name? Sendik's on Downer is absolutely irreplaceable. We're writing this, by the way, from the other side of the world, in Nanjing, China, where we are spending our sabbatical year.

My favorite grocery store is definitely the Riverwest Co-op. It's a place where all kinds of folks from our diverse neighborhood come together. It's explicitly community-focused and has great ideals (member-owned, volunteer-run, not-for-profit). It's a great place to volunteer, I get a good discount and meet new neighbors ... I like it because it's more than just a grocery store- it's a place we own that is a positive force in the neighborhood and a business with morals.
