Kent Knapp, co-owner of Milwaukee Blacksmith, and Dave Sobelman, owner of Sobelman's Pub and Grill, originally planned for the massive Bloody Mary sculpture to be created and installed in time for the Democratic National Convention in June of 2020. When that didn't happen, they put the project on hold.
Recently, Knapp and his crew of workers – most of whom are his grown children – finished the sculpture of Wisconsin's favorite (second favorite?) cocktail and delivered it on Monday to Sobelman's, 1900 W. Saint Paul Ave.
The 6-foot-tall, 400-pound Bloody Mary work-of-art features an olive, celery and cheese cube garnish. Although Sobelman's is known for its outlandish accoutrements for the Bloodies – one even includes an entire fried chicken – time and budget resulted in the creation of a classic Bloody. Knapp says they may make and install a chaser someday as well.
Sobelman's customers are encouraged to grab a Bloody Mary and take a selfie in front of the sculpture. Sobelman's is currently hosting a contest to name the statue. Go to the Facebook page to enter to win a $25 gift card.
"Big sculpture pieces are something we'd never done prior to our show on the History Channel and the creation of the Death Star firepit," says Knapp. "They're a lot of fun."
