One big name missing from last week's flurry of concert announcements: the Big Gig. Sure, Summerfest announced the impending arrivals of Big Sean and the combined country powers of Darius Rucker and Lady Antebellum, but when it came to the big event, there was no news.

Well, no news no more: This morning, Summerfest announced that pop star Shawn Mendes will headline the American Family Insurance Amphitheater on Thursday, July 5.

Starting as a simple Vine sensation in 2013, recording short covers of popular songs, the 19-year-old Canadian graduated to becoming a pop star in his own right over the past several years, scoring big radio hits with "Stitches," "I Know What You Did Last Summer," "Mercy," "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" and "Treat You Better." He also opened several dates for Taylor Swift's blockbuster 1989 World Tour in 2015, won the People's Choice Award for Favorite Breakout Artist in 2016 as well as the American Music Award for Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist last year.

Mendes last came to Milwaukee just two years ago, headlining the opening night of the Wisconsin State Fair in 2016.

Tickets for the concert go on sale beginning Saturday, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. at both Summerfest.com and Ticketmaster.com. Tickets can also be purchased in person at the Summerfest box office, Ticketmaster ticket centers and select Walmart stores, as well as over the phone at 1-800-745-3000 (for a live Ticketmaster agent) or 1-866-448-7849 (for the "Ticketmaster Express" automated phone line).

Shawn Mendes joins a Summerfest lineup that currently includes Dave Matthews Band, Journey and Def Leppard, Florida Georgia Line, James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt, and Halsey and Logic. Stay tuned to OnMilwaukee for more headliner announcements – and the grounds stage headliners – as they come!

As much as it is a gigantic cliché to say that one has always had a passion for film, Matt Mueller has always had a passion for film. Whether it was bringing in the latest movie reviews for his first grade show-and-tell or writing film reviews for the St. Norbert College Times as a high school student, Matt is way too obsessed with movies for his own good.

When he's not writing about the latest blockbuster or talking much too glowingly about "Piranha 3D," Matt can probably be found watching literally any sport (minus cricket) or working at - get this - a local movie theater. Or watching a movie. Yeah, he's probably watching a movie.
