We're a bunch of business sign geeks here at OnMilwaukee. Especially when they are iconic, quirky, historic and in such a high-traffic part of town that we've passed by them zillions of times.

Thus, we have some feels about the new Shank Hall sign that was installed yesterday. It's not that the previous one was so extraordinary, it was just so much a part of the Farwell-meets-Ogden experience.

"We got the old one in the mid-90s, and we got some grant money we thought a digital sign would be cool," says Shank Hall owner, Peter Jest. "Plus my guys were getting tired of changing the marquee at one in the morning in the rain and snow."

The new digital sign, installed by Lemberg Electric Company in Brookfield, can also advertise many more shows which is good for business.

"The staff is having fun programming it," says Jest.

The letters from Shank Hall's old sign will live on at The Rave / Eagles Club. "I passed them on for their marquee," says Jest. "They served us well."
