Ah, "The Breakfast Club." The cult classic film starring Judd Nelson and the puckery Molly Ringwald shaped late-80s popular culture, introducing expressions like "Eat my shorts" and "Smoke up, Johnny!"
This weekend, the Midwest Rock Opera Company (MiROC) takes John Hughes' film to the stage with "The Saturday Club," an adaptation of the "The Breakfast Club." The show runs November 17-19 and 25-26 with matinees on November 19 and 26 at Bucketworks, 1319 N. Martin Luther King Dr.
Like the film, MiROC's version is set in a high school detention hall and features the infamous five stereotypical, but very different, teenagers. According to co-director Derek Jacobs, who makes his directing debut with "Saturday Club," the show is very similar to the film and uses some of the tunes from the soundtrack.
"We're pretty much using the script from the movie, with a few changes and deletions in some of the scenes. We want to keep the same general feel of the movie, but adapting it to a Milwaukee setting in current times," says Jacobs, who celebrates ten years with MiROC.
Jacobs, 33, joined MiROC during his senior year of college at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, and has since been involved with every show, both on stage and behind the scenes. Riverwest's Melanie Beres founded the not-for-profit group in 1991 and brought rock opera to a new level with ambitious performances of "The Wall," "Purple Rain," and more.
"I hope that MiROC can continue to thrive. It's been a struggle at times to keep the group alive, but there's always just enough people coming through the door to make each show work," says Jacobs.
Tickets to "The Saturday Club" are $18 for adults, $15 for students/seniors/adults 25 and under. Matinee is $15. Group rates are $14 for groups of 10 or more. Call (414) 264-4058 to reserve tickets and for exact times.
