Ensamble Studio, with offices in Madrid and Boston, won the 2021 Marcus Prize, which includes $100,000 as an award and to fund a supported design studio for students in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP) at UW-Milwaukee.
This week, the lead architects at Ensamble – Antón García-Abril and Débora Mesa – visit UWM for a lecture, called ON-SITE OFF-SITE, which, according to SARUP, proposes an immersion into the processes of conception and realization of the firm’s works.
“Topics as diverse as the construction of the landscape or the prefabrication of the house are addressed, revealing how technologies are at times appropriated, at times invented, and at all times creatively utilized at the service of architecture.”
The talk takes place at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 15, at Engelmann 105, 2033 E. Hartford Ave., on the UWM Campus.
“Ensamble’s name, processes and practice reflect the extraordinary times we’re living in,” said Lesley Lokko, 2021 Marcus Prize juror, in a press release for the announcement. “The combination of an outstanding firm and an outstanding prize bodes well for the future of all our built environment professions, not just architecture.”
According to SARUP, The Marcus Prize was established in 2005 with the support of the Marcus Corporation Foundation as a biennial, international architecture award that honors emerging architects for their outstanding work to date, as well as recognizing the promise of their future contributions to the field of architecture.
Also this week at SARUP, The Association for Preservation Technology's (APT) Technical Committee on Documentation (TC-Doc) in conjunction with the APT Western Great Lakes Chapter (APTWGLC), the Milwaukee Preservation Alliance (MPA) and University of Wisconsin Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning Historic Preservation Institute (UWM SARUP HPI) presents a two-day in-person Documentation Workshop, organized by Historic Preservation Institute Director Matt Jarosz and Historic Preservation masters students.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he lived until he was 17, Bobby received his BA-Mass Communications from UWM in 1989 and has lived in Walker's Point, Bay View, Enderis Park, South Milwaukee and on the East Side.
He has published three non-fiction books in Italy – including one about an event in Milwaukee history, which was published in the U.S. in autumn 2010. Four more books, all about Milwaukee, have been published by The History Press.
With his most recent band, The Yell Leaders, Bobby released four LPs and had a songs featured in episodes of TV's "Party of Five" and "Dawson's Creek," and films in Japan, South America and the U.S. The Yell Leaders were named the best unsigned band in their region by VH-1 as part of its Rock Across America 1998 Tour. Most recently, the band contributed tracks to a UK vinyl/CD tribute to the Redskins and collaborated on a track with Italian novelist Enrico Remmert.
He's produced three installments of the "OMCD" series of local music compilations for OnMilwaukee.com and in 2007 produced a CD of Italian music and poetry.
In 2005, he was awarded the City of Asti's (Italy) Journalism Prize for his work focusing on that area. He has also won awards from the Milwaukee Press Club.
He has be heard on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee talking about his "Urban Spelunking" series of stories, in that station's most popular podcast.
