Yes, today is National Rum Day. It's a day in which it's more OK than ever to enjoy the quaff made from sweet cane sugar. Here are a few recipes to help you unwind after a long day at work and celebrate America's day of rum.
You can try these with Ron Abuelo Anejo – made by third-generation family-owned Panamanian company Varela Hermanos – which is aged in oak and has an alluring amber color and sweet coconut and spicy vanilla flavors swirling around. But, really, you don't even need to mix the Anejo; it works really nicely neat or on the rocks.
But, it's rum day, so try it that way and in these cococtions, too...
EARLY RISER
- 1-1/2 ounce rum
- 1/2 ounce Jumbie Coconut Splash
- 1 ounce fresh mango juice
- 1 ounce pineapple juice
Pour ingredients into an iced-filled shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into a tall glass. Garnish with maraschino cherries and orange slices.
ABUELORITA
- 2 ounces rum
- 1 ounce triple sec
- 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
Pour ingredients into an iced-filled shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into an ice filled rocks glass. Garnish with lime wedge.
ABUELO SPARKLER
- 2 ounces Ron Abuelo Anejo
- 4 ounces sparkling wine
- Ginger ale
Pour Anejo and sparkling wine into a tall glass and top with ginger ale.
LORD PANAMA
- 2 ounces rum
- 5 ounces ginger beer
- Lime wedge
Pour the rum over ice in a highball glass then fill with ginger beer. Squeeze in juice from lime wedge. Stir to mix.
SMOKY ROSE
Mixologist: Gabriel Orta, W Hotel, Miami
- 1-1/2 ounce rum
- 3/4 ounce lemon juice
- 1/2 ounce agave nectar
- 1/2 ounce apple cider
- 4-5 chunks of apple
- 1 rosemary sprig
Muddle apple chunks in a shaker and then pour in the ingredients. Shake and strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish with a sprig of rosemary and a slice of apple.
THE PANAMANIAN SOOTHER
Mixologist: Jonathan Pogash
(Pitcher drink - served 8-10)
- 1 1/2 cups rum
- 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
- 1 oz agave nectar
- 1 pack blueberries
- 12 sage leaves
- 2 bottles diet ginger beer
Muddle the berries and sage together in a large pitcher. Add remaining ingredients with ice and stir well.
