Milwaukee International Film Festival goers expecting to see the world premiere of "The Renaissance," the new documentary by local director and producer Chris Smith ("American Movie," "Home Movie"), instead saw "The Yes Men" Friday due to legal battles surrounding the film.
Smith appeared on stage before the 7:30 p.m. screening at the Oriental and read a statement discussing legal challenges in completing the film, which is about the remodeling of the Third Ward's Renaissance Building. Patrons were offered their money back, but nearly all stayed to see the hilarious "The Yes Men" (also by Smith and Sarah Price).
"The Yes Men" opens next week in Milwaukee and follows a couple of anti-corporate activist-pranksters as they impersonate World Trade Organization spokesmen on TV and at business conferences around the world.
Tenants of The Renaissance Building told OMC at the screening that the film will be completed once issues are worked out with the current landlord.
