Rebecca Bohn is a full-time nursing student who has worked at the Jackalope Lounj, attached to the Wicked Hop, for five years.
From Kewaskum, Bohn moved to Milwaukee to attend the nursing program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She currently lives in the Third Ward.
Bohn brings personality and talent to her bar, where she is always willing to invent a new shot based on the customer’s tastes. Try it sometime.
OnMilwaukee.com: What is the best part of your job?
Rebecca Bohn: The atmosphere. It’s very "anything goes." There are all age groups here -- it’s a very diverse crowd -- and I really like that a lot.
OMC: What are your favorite drinks to make?
RB: I like to experiment with different shots. Basically, someone can give me a flavor they like and I try to make it.
OMC: So, what’s an example of a shot you made up?
RB: The grape Tootsie Pop. It had chocolate vodka, grape vodka, sweet and sour, triple sec and grape Pucker. (Starts pouring.) Let’s try one.
OMC: Crap, this really does taste like a grape Tootsie Pop.
RB: Thanks.
OMC: Do you ever have to cut people off? And if so, how do you do it?
RB: I start out being nice. I just say something like, "I think you’ll thank me in the morning." Then I try to just serve them juice or soda, and a lot of times, by that point, they can’t tell the difference.
OMC: Have you ever cleaned up puke?
RB: No, not here. But at other bars, yes. I was a bartender in Oshkosh for four years.
OMC: What’s annoying about your job?
RB: Immature drinkers who don’t know how to act in public. Also, this is my social life. It’s fun, but it means I basically lack another social life.
OMC: How many nights a week do you work?
RB: I used to work five. I now work two or three.
OMC: How’s the smoking ban treating you?
RB: I love it. I’m not a smoker and I love not having to go home after work and hop in the shower right away.
OMC: What do you like to drink when you;re on the other side of the bar?
RB: Anything. Everything. Wine, Bloody Marys, beer, shots.
OMC: Do you live close to work?
RB: Yes, I live in the Third Ward. I love it. I feel safe here. It’s very young professional. There’s so much to do and see, especially in the summertime. I love all the festivals and Summerfest.
OMC: What do you like to do when you’re not working or studying?
RB: Catch up on sleep. Check out new restaurants. Some of my favorites are Cafe Lulu in Bay View and Crazy Water (in Walker’s Point). And I’m a big Brewers fan. I think they’re going to have a good season. Hopefully they can turn their pitching around.
OMC: Have you ever gone out on a date with someone who asked you out while you were working?
RB: Yes. He came in and had a couple of drinks and we started talking about the Brewers and I thought we had a lot in common. But it went terribly. He was a total bump on a log.
OMC: So why do you want to be a nurse?
RB: I get a rewarding feeling from the work, from seeing people get better. I want to be a benefit to someone. I want to help them benefit in life.
