Sturtevant-based manufacturing company Putzmeister America, Inc. is doing its part to help cool Japan's damaged nuclear reactors.
The company sent a truck-mounted boom pump, usually used to pour concrete for bridge and high-rise construction, to pour water over Fukushima's nuclear reactor.
Putzmeister America's boom pumps are tall enough and precise enough to help cool hot spots in the reactor. The remote-controlled pumps also allow operators to keep a safe distance while fighting the spread of radiation from the reactor.
Because of the effort's success, Putzmeister America is readying two more pumps to send over to Japan in the next few days, joining two others sent by Putzmeister Concrete Pumps GmbH in Aichtal, Germany.
Service technicians will also go along to help train power plant workers to use the pumps and help monitor equipment.
