According to the World Cancer Research Fund International, pancreatic cancer is the 12th most common cancer in the world and there were nearly a half-million new cases in 2020 alone.
The American Cancer Society estimates that around 64,000 people will be diagnosed with the disease this year and about 50,500 will die of it.
Those are the kinds of numbers that the Purple Stride is fighting against.
The annual walk is held at 60 sites around the country and one of them is right here in the Milwaukee area.
PanCAN PurpleStride Milwaukee with Premier Sponsor Hatch Staffing Services & Caminata Strong - Memory of Al Caminata is slated for Saturday, April 29, at The Rock Sports Complex, 7011 S. Ballpark Dr., in Franklin.
Proceeds from the event – which is a sea of purple solidarity – support research like the PanCAN Early Detection Initiative and free resources and support from PanCAN Patient Services.
The event village with its exhibitors opens at 10 a.m. and the opening ceremony kicks off at 11. Then, at 11:30, the walk begins.
“We loved being back in person last year and want to make an even bigger impact this year – we need YOU to do that,” organizers say. “We’re bringing together pancreatic cancer survivors, families, caregivers, researchers and supporters in your community for a memorable day, and we want you there.
“Walk around the event village, grab a snack, write on the tribute wall, take pictures with your family and friends in the photo area, and be inspired during the opening ceremony before you set off on the ultimate walk to end pancreatic cancer.”
