Voters may already have their eyes set on Nov. 3, but Wisconsin has an equally important election coming up: the state partisan primary, to be held on Tuesday, Aug. 11. 

While there might not be any presidential-sized decisions on the ballot, there are plenty of impactful contests to be decided. (For a look at what's on your ballot in this partisan primary, plug your address in here.) And, although election day is still weeks away, some deadlines are quickly approaching.

Voter registration

For instance, the deadline for voter registration by mail or online is Wednesday, July 22. Those submitting their voter registration by mail must have their registration form as well as proof of residence – which can include a state ID, driver's license, bank statement, paycheck, paystub or other options listed here – postmarked to your municipal clerk by Wednesday, July 22. The same goes for those wishing to register to vote online, which is open through Wednesday, July 22.

Voters can also register in person at their municipal clerk's office by 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, as well as in person at your polling place on the day of the election.

However, if you wish to vote safely with an absentee ballot this year due to the COVID-19 outbreak, you must be registered to vote first before requesting an absentee ballot. So, if you want to avoid crowds or in-person interactions, register to vote now. 

Absentee ballots

As for requesting an absentee ballot for the partisan primary election, your request must be received by the municipal clerk by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6. (For those who are indefinitely confined, the clerk should receive your absentee ballot request by 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7.) The completed ballot must then be received – whether by mail, delivery to the clerk's office, your polling place or by established local dropbox – by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

November election dates

The voter registration deadline for the presidential election this November is Wednesday, Oct. 14 (for those registering online or via mail), and the deadline for requesting an absentee ballot for that election is not until Friday, Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. For more information and resources on both elections, click here.
