Ordering off of the menu doesn’t have to be reserved for fast food restaurants and secret pop-ups. However, you should probably pick and choose your battles.
On a weekend trip to Nomad World Pub, 1401 E. Brady St., I did just that – and it was well worth it.
Given that it was an international break for most European soccer leagues, the mid-day traffic was a little lighter than usual at Nomad. However, on match day, the bar is bustling with fans of major clubs from around the world, each supporting their squad in full voice from the various corners of the bar and their outdoor spaces. Taking that into consideration, I sat down with bartender David Richard and said two words that any bartender either hates to hear, or perhaps thrives on: “Surprise me.” The only condition was that the drink had to contain Jameson whiskey.
Challenge accepted.
Since we were situated in the Brady Street bar’s covered outdoor patio area, which has a margarita machine and ingredients for said margaritas, he opted for a Jameson Orange Margarita, mixing Jameson Orange with Triple Sec liqueur, simple syrup and lime juice. While he admitted it was a bit of an experiment, the proportions were just right, and it made for a very successful first pass. Maybe it was the heaters over the bar, or the drink itself, but it wasn’t hard to envision a summer Saturday out on the patio at Nomad, watching soccer, cheering on club or country with one of those drinks in my hand. If you want to try it for yourself, go right ahead. Just be sure to thank David in person at the Nomad the next time you’re out on Brady Street.
Jameson Orange Margarita
- 2 ounces Jameson Orange
- 1 ounce Triple Sec liqueur
- ½ ounce simple syrup
- 1 ounce lime juice
- Pour over ice
- Garnish with a lime
Also, a word to the wise: Take a second to read the room before ordering “off the menu” at a bar. If it’s a Saturday night and the bar is busy, your bartender may be a bit less willing to experiment with new drink creations. If you’re bellied up to the bar on off-peak hours, however, there may be time to get creative. Enjoy!
