Before I get into Netflix's newly announced offerings for the month of August, I want to quick talk about this current month – because the streaming service added some of the best movies to come out this decade in July and didn't apparently bother to tell anybody. 

Last week, Birth.Movies.Death news editor Scott Wampler tweeted that Jonathan Glazer's brilliant sci-fi haunt "Under the Skin" was now on Netflix. Exciting news for sure – but also very confusing and surprising news considering the film was nowhere to be found on Netflix's monthly list of new arrivals.

Later, as I myself perused the streaming service's menus, trying and failing to dodge all the autoplaying shows and movies, I discovered "Under the Skin" wasn't the only secret addition. The neon fever dream "Spring Breakers" was now available. The smart and sly abortion comedy "Obvious Child" was added. The Oscar-winning kidnapping drama "Room" was now on Netflix. "A Most Violent Year," "The Rover," "Laggies" and "The Spectacular Now" – all on the list now too.

It's an impressive haul of movies – ones you would think Netflix would be interested in telling people about. "Under the Skin" and "The Spectacular Now" were two of the most well-reviewed movies of their years. "Room" won an Academy Award. 

Did Netflix suddenly sign a deal with A24 (the studio behind all of these movies) and want to get the movies on there as soon as possible, instead of waiting for the monthly announcements? Did they just forget to put them on the list? Am I looking a gift horse in the mouth?

The answer to the last question is "probably," but it speaks to my general problem with Netflix – mainly with its original content, but also with its treatment of the rest of its library. (Because this is far from the first time; Andrew Haigh's brilliant "45 Years" also randomly arrived with Netflix not bothering to tell anyone.) Netflix buys up movie upon movie upon TV show upon movie and puts them out there ... without really bothering to tell anyone or sell anything. There's no release strategy. There's no curation. There's no announcement or even just a "oh, btw, here's some critically acclaimed stuff you might like" tweet.

It's just hoarding programming – maybe you'll find it, maybe you won't, but definitely Netflix doesn't care. It needs subscribers, not views. It just wants to point at its walls and show you all the fancy books it's bought, never mind if it ever plans to read them or share them.

For all my railing on Netflix, it's done a lot of good. There's no blockbusters amongst those movies I mentioned above, so anytime more people can get eyes on them, the better. And many of these movies probably never reached smaller cities and towns on their theatrical runs. Even in Milwaukee, a fair-sized market but by no means a L.A. or New York City, many of them barely made it to screens here for very long. Netflix gets these movies in front of people that otherwise may never have gotten to see them. 

I guess it'd just be nice if Netflix realized it had that power too – and did something with it. It's one thing to have a bunch of stuff; it's another to actually put it to use and put it into action. Otherwise, you're just a hoarder. 

But hey, there's no room for anything else when you've got a new ad for "Stranger Things" season three and the ability to customize your profile icon.
