Due to the high winds that are still raging outside as I type this, 14 Milwaukee Public Schools will shift to virtual learning Thursday. The winds overnight have caused power outages, leading to the change.

Students and staff will be virtual at these schools:

  •     Brown Street Academy
  •     Grant Gordon Learning Center
  •     Albert E. Kagel School
  •     Escuela Vieau
  •     Lloyd Barbee Montessori School
  •     James Fenimore Cooper School
  •     Ralph Waldo Emerson School
  •     Humboldt Park School
  •     Milwaukee Parkside School for the Arts
  •     Frances Starms Discovery Learning Center
  •     Starms Early Childhood Center
  •     Oliver Wendell Holmes School
  •     Dr. George W. Carver Academy of Mathematics and Science
  •     James E. Groppi High School

According to MPS, teachers will reach out to children and families with specific instructions for Thursday learning.

The district suggests students and staff who do not have power at home to visit a Milwaukee Public Library for virtual learning. All branch libraries open at 11 a.m. Thursday, and Central Library opens at 10.

The Atkinson Library remains temporarily closed.

As of 6 a.m., the National Weather Service reported peak winds of up to 66 mph at Mitchell Airport in the past 24 hours.

At the time of writing, We Energies' web site noted that around 76,000 customers were affected by outages. Find a power outages map here.
