The Milwaukee Public Market today announced it will give a $5,000 grant to the Milwaukee Public Library for books and programming to promote healthy eating and living, with an emphasis on cooking with children.
The library will spend half the grant on programming and half on supporting books and materials.
"Part of our mission and purpose is to develop partnerships with local civic organizations to create resources that have a culinary educational benefit," said market spokesperson, Paul Schwartz.
"Partnering with the Milwaukee Public Library is a natural fit. Our experience with public cooking classes and housing fresh, artisan food vendors allows us to be more than a financial partner throughout this process."
The market and Friends of the Milwaukee Public Library have partnered for the past two years on selling used MPL books for $1 from self-service carts on the market's upper level. The proceeds go back to the library.
"We are grateful to the Milwaukee Public Market for this generous gift and excited about the opportunity to work in partnership with them in sharing information about healthy eating and lifestyles with Milwaukee's families ," said public library director, Paula Kiely.
