Yahoo's Real Estate section powered by The Street had a post recently that heralded Milwaukee's unappreciated nature and our growing youth culture. Both variables helped place Milwaukee in the site's "America's Five Most Underrated Cities" list.
"Despite a smaller population, the typical denizen is younger," says the photo caption.
Indeed, Milwaukee has gotten younger over the recent years, and population in the greater Downtown neighborhoods has been growing.
Says The Street, "Milwaukee's been losing population since the 1960s, but the release valve's shutting quickly as the losses trickle to less than a percent – the best population news Milwaukee's received since the city grew 16.3 percent during the 1950s – and the city gets younger." It goes on to say, our "median age (was) 30.3 last year, well below the nation's average age of 36.8."
There are a few errors in the list. No, Green Bay isn't a suburb. The Brewers actually have been "blowing the retractable roof off Miller Park" (check the attendance figures), the Bucks were in the NBA playoffs two seasons ago and Yahoo calls our macro brew "MolsonCoors' Miller." While it's true that Molson Coors Brewing Company is the parent company of MillerCoors, we Milwaukeeans still like to just say MillerCoors. Right?
Oh, well. I'm still happy that Milwaukee made the list and I invite Yahoo and The Street to come visit our fine town.
Other cities making the list? Chicago, Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Buffalo.
