From bubblers to bratwurst to breweries, Milwaukee has a unique culture of its own. So let’s create a signature "toast" for Milwaukee that – through word of mouth, the clinking of glasses and a little online promotion – will be expressed robustly before taking that first sip.
Because of Milwaukee’s German roots, many Milwaukeeans adopted "prost!" as our signature toast, but let’s pick something even "more Milwaukee." However, like "prost" and other toasts like "salud," L'chaim" and "cheers," maybe the new MKE Toast will be passed on for generations.
To enter the contest, go here, through Sunday, March 12. One other judge (TBA) will join professor and Chair of the Linguistics Department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Garry Davis, Gibraltar jazz club owner Evan Christian, Newaukee CEO Angela Damiani and Julio Maldonado, partner at Maldonado & Morgan advertising agency and co-owner of the soon-to-open Snifters, to narrow down submissions to the five best toasts.
Readers will pick the first place winner who will be announced on March 29.
The judges will choose their favorite Milwaukee Toast based on the following criteria: whether the word(s) in the toast create a sense of celebration and joy; the meaning behind the toast; its uniqueness to Milwaukee culture; and its ability to pass the test of time/remain relevant for years to come.
It’s history in the making. It’s the future. And it’s fun. (Clink!)
