For the 10th straight year, October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee, presented by the restaurants of Potawatomi Hotel & Casino. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, dining guides, delectable features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food, as well as voting for your "Best of Dining 2016."

If it’s homestyle comfort food fare you’re after, you’ll find it at The Farmer’s Wife, 6531 W. Mitchell St. in West Allis.

After opening its doors for the first time on Oct. 1, the restaurant is just developing its stride. But, it's got great bones. In fact, the first thing you'll notice when you visit is the look and feel of the restaurant, which is reminiscent of an old farmhouse. There's warm wooden flooring and weathered wooden tables. But, there's also an unmistakably earnest vibe that embodies the spirit of down-home hospitality. 

And if you’re craving the sort of food your mother or grandmother used to make – things like pot roast, meatloaf and fried chicken (which is the dinner special on Wednesdays) – you’ll find it on the menu, which also includes items like grassfed burgers, a lobster roll and housemade gumbo. And, as you might expect, there are also little touches – like hand-cut fries and homemade desserts – that may well become the hallmark of this newly minted spot.

Here are a few of the dishes we enjoyed on our first visit.

Lobster poutine

If you’re going to opt for poutine, why not go all out? This lobster poutine offers up sturdy hand-cut fries smothered in ooey-gooey cheese sauce with plenty of rich tender chunks of lobster meat ($13).

Chicken and waffle sliders

Hungry for a new kind of chicken and waffles? These sliders feature breaded chicken tenders perched on housemade waffles and served alongside a sweet and spicy gravy with a hint of maple syrup ($10).

House salad

This simple salad, made with crisp lettuce, red onion and cherry tomatoes with a light, balanced vinaigrette comes alongside dinner entrees (like the chicken pot pie below). But, you can also order it up on the side for $4.

Chicken pot pie

Of course, if it’s comfort food you’re after, there’s nothing like a homestyle pot pie. This one has chunks of chicken and plenty of vegetables in a tasty cream sauce. It’s served in a large mug and covered with a layer of crispy golden puff pastry ($10).

Cake

Don’t skip dessert. This cocoa cayenne cake with brown butter bourbon frosting takes regular chocolate cake to new levels with the subtle kick of cayenne (no, it’s not too spicy) and the richness of both browned butter and bourbon in the creamy frosting ($6). You’ll be craving a glass of ice cold milk on the side.

The Farmer’s Wife is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. On Sundays, they serve brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
