“Lightfield,” a new illuminated geometric art installation by HYBYCOZO (Hyperspace Bypass Construction Zone), will arrive at Cathedral Square Park in January, Milwaukee Downtown BID#21 announced Tuesday.
The experience, designed by Ukranian and Canadian artists Yelena Filipchuk and Serge Beaulieu, will be free to visit, Jan. 19-May 5.
Described as a, “multicolored, large-scale art display,” “Lightfield” will encompass eight sculptures on the ground and 16 lanterns that will hang from trees in the park.
“Our goal is to make Downtown Milwaukee public spaces more vibrant, walkable and inviting year-round for employees, residents and visitors through public art and activation,” said Beth Weirick, CEO of Milwaukee Downtown, BID #21, in a statement.
“‘Lightfield’ by HYBYCOZO will bring a fabulous splash of color to our Downtown over the winter months and provide educational opportunities for some of our younger guests.”
An opening night event, Thursday, Jan. 19, from 4:30 until 8 p.m., will include warm beverages, s’mores and local DJs and will serve as a kickoff party for Gallery Night MKE, which continues on the following day.
Free programming will continue throughout the installation’s Cathedral Square Park run, with hot chocolate and s’more roasting nights and more.
Free educational materials for parents and teachers to explore art and mathematics, including lesson plans, coloring pages, folding polyhedrons and more, can be downloaded at matharteducation.org.
“Lightfield,” notes the release, “invites the viewer to explore the intersection of art and mathematics, a theme which has inspired the artists in their collaborations.”
The duo has collaborated on works that are on permanent display around the world, including in Dubai, Istanbul, Las Vegas and New Zealand.

Financial support for the installation is also being provided by Herb Kohl Philanthropies, Madison Medical Affiliates, Events by Design and Milwaukee County Parks, as well as from proceeds from tickets to this year’s NYE MKE party Dec. 31 at Milwaukee Art Museum.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he lived until he was 17, Bobby received his BA-Mass Communications from UWM in 1989 and has lived in Walker's Point, Bay View, Enderis Park, South Milwaukee and on the East Side.
He has published three non-fiction books in Italy – including one about an event in Milwaukee history, which was published in the U.S. in autumn 2010. Four more books, all about Milwaukee, have been published by The History Press.
With his most recent band, The Yell Leaders, Bobby released four LPs and had a songs featured in episodes of TV's "Party of Five" and "Dawson's Creek," and films in Japan, South America and the U.S. The Yell Leaders were named the best unsigned band in their region by VH-1 as part of its Rock Across America 1998 Tour. Most recently, the band contributed tracks to a UK vinyl/CD tribute to the Redskins and collaborated on a track with Italian novelist Enrico Remmert.
He's produced three installments of the "OMCD" series of local music compilations for OnMilwaukee.com and in 2007 produced a CD of Italian music and poetry.
In 2005, he was awarded the City of Asti's (Italy) Journalism Prize for his work focusing on that area. He has also won awards from the Milwaukee Press Club.
He has be heard on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee talking about his "Urban Spelunking" series of stories, in that station's most popular podcast.
