Kopp's Frozen Custard raised some eyebrows with its October 2022 flavor forecast.

On Oct. 9, the Kopp's Hey Cupcake special consists of vanilla custard, yellow cake pieces, thick fudge and a sprinkling of mini rainbow chips. That's not the controversial part.

In a highlighted orange box on the flavor of the day forecast flyer headlined, "Have fun with these celebrated national special days in October," Oct. 9 is listed as, " National Pro-Life Cupcake Day – Hey Cupcake."

This afternoon, the frozen custard stand backtracked on that via a tweet:

"Linking 'National Pro-Life Cupcake Day' with our long-running flavor of 'Hey Cupcake,' was an oversight on our part and an honest mistake," Kopps tweeted at 2:43 p.m.

After this article was posted, the PDF file on the Kopp's website was replaced with a new version that omitted the National Pro-Life Cupcake Day reference.

OnMilwaukee first reached out to Kopp's a little after 11 a.m. but did not hear back before running the article an hour later.  This afternoon, their tweet further explained, "Going forward, we strive to be more diligent in reviewing our flabor lists and any flavors we may link to a national holiday."

The custard restaurant did not explain how the oversight happened.

According to NationalDayCalendar.com, "On this day, cupcakes are baked to honor the lives of those not yet born. The day also raises awareness about the issue of abortion. Cupcakes are a sweet way to get a conversation started on a difficult subject. ... Cupcakes for Life founded the day as a positive way to discuss pro-life awareness."

The move seems like an unexpectedly political one from the longstanding Milwaukee custard favorite.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he lived until he was 17, Bobby received his BA-Mass Communications from UWM in 1989 and has lived in Walker's Point, Bay View, Enderis Park, South Milwaukee and on the East Side.

He has published three non-fiction books in Italy – including one about an event in Milwaukee history, which was published in the U.S. in autumn 2010. Four more books, all about Milwaukee, have been published by The History Press.

With his most recent band, The Yell Leaders, Bobby released four LPs and had a songs featured in episodes of TV's "Party of Five" and "Dawson's Creek," and films in Japan, South America and the U.S. The Yell Leaders were named the best unsigned band in their region by VH-1 as part of its Rock Across America 1998 Tour. Most recently, the band contributed tracks to a UK vinyl/CD tribute to the Redskins and collaborated on a track with Italian novelist Enrico Remmert.

He's produced three installments of the "OMCD" series of local music compilations for OnMilwaukee.com and in 2007 produced a CD of Italian music and poetry.

In 2005, he was awarded the City of Asti's (Italy) Journalism Prize for his work focusing on that area. He has also won awards from the Milwaukee Press Club.

He has be heard on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee talking about his "Urban Spelunking" series of stories, in that station's most popular podcast.
