Here's our monthly look at what's new, what's shakin' and what's buzzin' around town.

LAKEFRONT CAFE
According to sources at Alterra Coffee Roasters, the new lakefront cafe is now not likely to open until spring 2002. Although the lease has been signed, work on the cafe would likely not be completed before the end of the year.

WHAT'S THE STORY MORNING GLORY?
The 27th Annual Morning Glory Craft Fair is slated for Aug. 11-12, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Prospect Ave. at Royall Pl. It's always a great event. Call (414) 962-7002 for details.

BACKSTREET'S DRUNK, OH YEA!
Sorry, that's mean and insensitive. We apologize. Don't worry Backstreet Boys' fans, even with A.J.'s recent voyage into an alcohol dependency clinic, the Boys' August 24 Bradley Center show is still on. But stay tuned as things might change. And Backstreet fans, please note drinking is bad.

TOSS BACK A PINT
The Pint is open for business, just two doors south of Steny's on 2nd Street, with an inviting green awning. It has a nice beer garden, juke box and a great atmosphere. Stop in, have a cold drink, and say "Hi" to the new owners, Betsy and Becky. The "Grand Opening" was Fri., July 13.

BYE, BYE BANANA JOE'S?
An agent for Banana Joe's on Old World Third St. withdrew its liquor license request at the city's July 24, 2001 Utilities and Licenses Committee meeting. With the license slated to expire at midnight and a boat load of problems surrounding the downtown bar, the place is closed until the next meet on September 11. The future ain't looking so good for Banana Joe.

BORDERS PATROL
The Greenfield Borders Books & Music building is up and the shop should be opening soon. There's no specific opening date yet, but when it opens the store -- which has another location in the River Point mall in Fox Point, will certainly give nearby Barnes & Noble a run for its money.

NEW QUIZNO'S
Look for a new Quizno's to open on Wisconsin Ave. at the southwest corner of Broadway. Their location in Westown (on W. Wisconsin Ave.) has been extremely popular and Quizno's obviously expects to be able to compete with the well-established Cousins across the street.

MORE CABS, PLEASE
Just wondering, why does the city limit the number of taxi cabs in Milwaukee? It makes getting around town more difficult for visitors.

AFTER WORK, UNWIND
The Milwaukee County Parks and Riverwalk District have started a new outdoor concert series at Red Arrow Park, 920 N. Water St. Shows are from 4:30-7 p.m. July 24, 27, 31 and Aug. 3, 7 and 10.

A GRAND NEW NAME
The Shops at the Grand Avenue is the new name for The Grand Avenue. Look for Boston Store's brand new look to debut in November.

MILWAUKEE KICKS IT!
There's a rally at Pere Marquette Park, 900 N. Plankinton, on Sat., July 22 at 1 p.m. The purpose is to support the effort to bring a Major League Soccer (MLS) team to town! Visit www.milwaukeelovessoccer.com.

RE-PAINTING ALREADY?
The faux brickwork installed last year at East Side intersections as part of the beautification of the North Ave. neighborhood has been getting repainted lately. Seems kind of soon, especially since the faux bricks -- which aren't bricks at all, but are carved into the tar and painted to resemble bricks -- were supposed to be more durable than real bricks. Since the crosswalks (caution, slippery when wet) are also peeling, Milwaukeeans ought to get a full repainting for free from the company that did the work.
