The Brewers have selected right handed pitcher Jeremy Jeffress with the 16th overall pick in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, it was announced today by special assistant to the general manager/director of amateur scouting Jack Zduriencik.
Jeffress, 18, went 5-1 with a 0.19 ERA in 2006 at Halifax County (VA) HS, striking out 71 in 37 innings pitched. Jeffress threw a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts in late April.
“Jeremy is a pitcher with an athletic frame,” said Zduriencik. “He has loose, clean arm action with a solid delivery. His athleticism is something that will help him develop into a solid Major Leaguer.”
Jeffress’ upper-90s fastball was tabbed second best in the nation in Baseball America’s 2006 High School Best Tools; he was ranked by Baseball America as the eighth best high school prospect prior to the 2006 season. In addition to his fastball, Jeffress also throws a breaking ball and slider.
A well-rounded athlete, Jeffress ran the 60-yard dash in 6.76 seconds and led his high school basketball team in scoring and three-pointers as a point guard.
