A brand new farmer’s market rolls out in Jackson Park this week.
The market, which will be open 4-7 p.m. on Thursday evenings from June 11 through Oct. 15, will be located in Jackson Park, 3500 W Forest Home Ave., adjacent to the Boathouse just north of the pond.
The market will start off small, featuring vendors including Wild Flour Bakery, That Salsa Lady, Vang Produce and Paper Pleasers, along with food from the Eats and Treats Food Truck. But, Jackson Park Farmers Market Committee Member Dena Radtke says more vendors are being added daily.
The market was the result of discussions among neighborhood residents who, despite their love for the neighborhood, felt there were relatively few things to do.
"There are no coffee shops to walk to," says Radtke, "There are limited restaurants for residents to hang out at, and there isn’t a venue to meet people you live next to very easily."
Rather than complaining, the group decided to take action.
"People with full-time jobs, families and lives made time to meet and create the vision," says Radtke. "They reached out and connected with the Jackson Park Community Association and Milwaukee Parks System and really made it happen."
After putting in the time and the research, the group decided a farmer’s market would be the ideal solution, creating a community hub for residents, as well as a place for farmers and small businesses to sell their wares. The market will also feature a different nonprofit, as well as live music each week.
"We cannot predict the future," says Radtke, "But this is a great step leading to a means for people to come to together, become a little healthier, support local farmers and vendors and have some fun."
