You never know what can happen in a Milwaukee bar late at night, and Thursday night in Bay View was certainly no exception.
On the same day that he announced and played a show at Madison's High Noon Saloon on his "No Name" tour, Jack White headed to Milwaukee for a late night snack, as well. That's when he popped up at The Vanguard (2659 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.) on the night of their 10th anniversary party, which also featured Milwaukee band Sex Scenes, and gave a very small crowd of unsuspecting patrons a show. In the middle of the night, he went live on Instagram for a broadcast of "Old Scratch Blues" from the new album:
White began touring small clubs throughout the country in support of his new record, “No Name,” which was also a surprise release, given out to fans at his Third Man Records store in Nashville, as well as London and Detroit before hitting streaming services. Shows like Thursday's appearance in Madison are being announced with little to no warning, and from the look of things, this was on nobody's radar until it was actually happening.
For context, The White Stripes’ first show outside of their home state of Michigan took place in 1999, when they opened for The Mistreaters at their record release show at Cactus Club. White has since formed a friendship with Chris Schulist of The Vanguard, WMSE, and most recently, Wiggle Room, and the show featured an infamous vinyl “flyer” for the show designed by Eric Von Munz that still hangs in Cactus Club to this day.
Who knows where Jack White will pop up next, but this appearance was certainly something very special.
