While considering ways to entice diners to visit Il Mito Trattoria e Enoteca for brunch, Chef Michael Feker says he had an "aha" moment: Why not create a culinary journey for patrons, inspired by his favorite international destinations?
And so he did.
His new brunch menu, which focuses on global flavors, features options for every kind of diner – from the timid to the internationally curious. There are also options for children and gluten-free customers.
"I am amazed how the gluten-free diet is overlooked and disrespected," Feker explains. "I wanted to give my gluten-intolerant friends the same choices and pay the same respect to their palate as I do to everyone else's. Also, I wished to show and prove to my colleagues that gluten-free is not a restriction, but an opportunity and challenge to create new flavors and experiences."
Diners craving traditional brunch can take part in the build-your-own Bloody Mary bar, featuring everything from grilled asparagus, crisp bacon and cocktail shrimp to lemons, limes and pickles. Pair that with the Family Platter ($18), which serves three and features scrambled eggs, roasted potatoes, fresh fruit and your choice of applewood-smoked bacon, grilled Italian sausage or grilled chicken.
If you're craving something south of the border, try Mexican Huevos Motuleños ($11), fried corn tortillas topped with beans, over-easy eggs, grilled tomatoes, chopped cilantro, avocado and cotija cheese.
Visit Spain with an omelet made from roasted peppers, caramelized onions, proscuitto and sun-dried tomatoes topped with Manchego ($12), Or, sample Torrijas, a Spanish-style "French toast" topped with fresh fruit, honey and homemade whipped cream.
Take a tour of the Mediterranean with a crisp Greek-style wrap made with spinach, egg and feta cheese ($11) served with a lemon-dressed organic watercress salad. Try the French crustless roasted duck and goat cheese quiche ($12), or take a taste of Venice with linguine pasta tossed with mussels, chopped clams, shrimp, scallops and calamari in a tangy white wine tomato sauce for $12.
Swing east to sample The Orient ($12) – sticky rice topped with grilled fresh fish of the day, spinach and Thai basil, a poached egg, Kim chi and Vietnamese-style chili sauce.
Or, if you'd prefer the comforting taste of home, there's always the Wisconsin Black Angus beef burger topped with cheddar cheese, crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and a fried egg ($12), or grilled New York strip steak and eggs for $15.
And don't forget the rest of the family. Kids have the choice of silver dollar pancakes, scrambled eggs, mini omelets, regular or "toad in a hole" French toast, green eggs and ham, or cheese pizza for $8.
No matter what you choose, Feker says he wants your brunch experience to embody "sitting back, relaxing, closing your eyes and allowing my food to transport your culinary soul to various regions of the world all from the comfort of your home away from home."
Sunday brunch at Il Mito Trattoria e Enoteca takes place on Sundays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The full menu is available at ilmito.com.
