A nice guy finally finished first. As a result, I wonder how hardcore Danny Gokey fans feel today.
Did Kris Allen's upset victory over Adam Lambert last night in the "American Idol" finale last night warm some cockles or make people mad/depressed about what could have been.
Just about everybody I've spoken to (and read) in the past few weeks thought Gokey outperformed Allen, but that Lambert would win the big prize.
"Idol" threw everyone a curve last night and now the pundits are searching for answers.
Was Lambert -- with his SoCal roots, show-biz background, guy-liner and painted fingernails -- too "polished" for the big prize? Did Allen, a humble guy from Arkansas, connect with viewers in flyover country?
Was it because a lot of people believe Lambert is gay? Was it because Allen seems less threatening, like current stars Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz and even John Mayer?
They'll be debating this one for awhile, but it's a safe bet that Gokey, Lambert and Allen will sell some CDs and concert tickets.
Though both finalists gave solid performances on the final show -- which included spirited showings by Keith Urban, Black Eyed Peas, Cyndi Lauper and a shaky and somewhat sad turn by Rod Stewart -- Lambert looked like the bigger star. He held his own with KISS, then looked right at home leaning on Brian May of Queen during "We Are the Champions."
When Ryan Seacrest announced the winner Allen seemed as stunned as everyone. "It feels good, man," he stammered, "but Adam deserves this."
A lot of viewers agreed.
Does it matter who wins? I guess we could ask Clay Aiken... or Taylor Hicks.
Or, if you see him around town, ask Danny Gokey, who sent out the following "tweet" late last night:
"Hey all. Man what a night!!!! I feel so blessed to be where Im at. Thanks to all my fans u all did it for me.....love you guys!!!!
