The Race of Gentlemen (known as "TROG"), is the latest traveling exhibit at the Harley-Davidson Museum and combines hotrods, motorcycles, carnivals and nostalgia.
The races originally took place on dry lakes around World War II in California, but were resurrected in 2012 on the beaches of New Jersey. To participate, vehicles and drivers have to comply with event rules that require strict, historically accurate aesthetics from the mid-century.
Through Sept. 4, the Harley-Davidson Museum presents "The Race of Gentlemen" exhibit inside The Garage. Through photography, on-site vehicles, hand-printed signs and easy-to-digest information, the exhibit examines the passion of the modern craftsmen – and craftswomen – along with the machines they ride.
"The people involved are really fanatical about art directing the event very carefully," says Jim Fricke, curatorial director of the Harley-Davidson Museum.
Photographer Cory Piehowicz captured incredible portraits of TROG participants and more than a dozen motorcycles and automobiles – all restored specifically for the Jersey Shores’ event – are on display.
"This show is a must-see for photographers or anyone interested in photography," says Fricke. "It's extremely visual."
