This is a time when people with great intentions make New Year's resolutions. A lot of them have to do with health.

I'm going to lose 10 pounds.

I'm going to stop smoking.

I'm going to eat better.

I'm going to get more sleep.

Those resolutions are common, boring and they don't enhance the sonic landscape like the musical resolution we're unveiling today at OnMilwaukee.com.

We're going to help you learn to play guitar.

We know a lot of people out there have guitars sitting at home, the cases caked in dust -- perhaps a string or two is missing and was never replaced -- because they bought them on a whim or received them as a gift and became frustrated trying to learn the most elementary chords or 12-bar blues shuffle patterns.

With help from the folks at GuitarInstructor.com, we're going to help alleviate that problem.

Beginning next month, we'll offer a series of video lessons on the site to get people engaged (or re-engaged) with the guitar. Learning to play in front of a computer may sound like a solitary activity, but you won't be doing it alone.

In order to add to the inspiration, we are looking for five beginning-level players to follow the lessons and provide us with weekly updates -- a guitar-blog, if you will -- about their progress.

We'll share the updates with a panel of experts and the reader whose musical journey is deemed most entertaining and enlightening will win a prize pack to be announced next month.

Our course will run for eight weeks, culminating with three song tutorials to help get you jamming. The winner will be announced in March.
